The why of this website

Hello, friends!

This website is the culmination of a dream I’ve had for a long time. Let me tell you all about it.

My name’s Mary, and I love to write. When I was a campus missionary at University Lutheran Church in Tallahassee, Florida, I had the opportunity to write all the time. I wrote four devotions a week for the church website, and I also started a blog about my experiences, entitled Iowa Girl Meets World.

I grew to love writing devotions. I loved finding ways to incorporate Law and Gospel. I appreciated the challenge of a different Bible passage every day. I valued the opportunity to apply our church’s annual focus in my writing.

And then, my time at University Lutheran ended, and I lost my writing outlet.

Sure, I had to do some writing at my church in Oklahoma, where I was the Director of Christian Education. However, writing confirmation lesson plans and newsletter articles wasn’t the same. I wanted the opportunity to write devotions regularly again.

Now, I work at a school. I put together math problems and sex education packets (yes, you read that right) and don’t get me wrong - I love my job. But it isn’t much of a writing outlet, either. So I’ve made my own!

Here, I hope to share the love of Jesus through weekly devotions for both adults and kids. The devotions will be based on the Lutheran lectionary (3-Year, Series A, to be specific). As much as possible, the devotions for adults will correspond to the devotions for kids, using the same Bible passage and basic premise. My hope is that parents and kids can use this website together to grow in their faith. Teachers could use it, too, sharing the kids’ devotions with their students and reading the adult version for themselves.

Psst - these devotions aren’t only for people with kids in their lives. :) They can certainly be read independently!

Keep an eye out for the first devotions, coming out this Tuesday in preparation for Ash Wednesday! Updates will be posted on the Facebook group!
