Second Sunday in Lent - Questions in the Dark
Goes along with Adult Devotion of the same title.
Jesus always wants to talk to us, because he loves us.
Read John 3:1-17.
Bible Focus: “Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night…” -John 3:1-2a
John 3:16 is the most famous verse in the Bible.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”
This is such an important verse! It tells us how much God loves everyone in the entire world, even though the world is full of sinful people. He chose to give up his Son, Jesus, to save those sinful people. All we have to do is believe in him, and we’ll go to heaven.
Because this verse is so important, you might think that Jesus said it to a whole crowd of people during one of his big sermons. Surprisingly, this verse was actually said to just one man in the middle of the night.
This man, Nicodemus, didn’t want anyone to know that he was talking to Jesus. He was worried that others might laugh at him if they knew, or even that he might lose his job. That didn’t stop Jesus, though. He didn’t care that Nicodemus came to him in secret. He was glad that Nicodemus came to him, and happy to answer his questions.
Jesus knows that sometimes we might be nervous to talk to him, like Nicodemus was. Maybe we’ve sinned, and we don’t want him to know. Perhaps we’re concerned about what other people might say. Nicodemus’s story is a reminder that Jesus just wants to talk to us, answer our questions, and reassure us of his love.
Your challenge this week:
Pray to God and ask him a question.
Please pray:
Dear Jesus, your love is perfect! I confess that sometimes I’m nervous to talk to you. Thank you for always answering me, even when I’m nervous. Please help me to always feel confident in my prayers. In your name I pray, Amen.
